About us
Tanzania is endowed with some of the most valuable raw materials in the world. However, it has historically exported these resources in their raw form rather than as finished products. This pattern is not coincidental. For generations, a persistent assumption has shaped economic structures and behavior: that advanced production and manufacturing belong elsewhere, while resource-rich countries are expected to supply raw inputs. As a result, minerals are exported as ore and re-imported as machinery, while agricultural outputs are exported as crops and return as processed ingredients. In this system, the continent supports industries it does not own and repurchases finished goods at higher value, reflecting external labor, expertise, and branding.
This assumption has become deeply embedded in economic life. It influences consumer preferences, policy decisions, and perceptions of quality. Locally produced goods are often met with skepticism, while imported products are afforded an unexamined trust, even when produced in distant contexts disconnected from local realities.
Mariam Ismail Rumatila was raised within this environment. She later pursued studies in International Business and Marketing, where she gained exposure to global manufacturing systems, including supply chains, industrial operations, and large-scale production processes. Through this experience, it became evident that Tanzania does not lack the fundamental capacity to produce high-quality goods. Rather, the challenge lies in the historical absence of deliberate investment and focus on building such capacity. The resources, knowledge, and human capital exist. What has been missing is a coordinated commitment to production.
In response, Maris Sustainable Group Limited was established on the principle that Tanzania possesses all the necessary conditions to produce world-class goods. Its founding objective is to translate this potential into tangible production. The group began with Maris Sustainable Skincare, its flagship venture, developed specifically for melanin-rich and East African skin. These formulations are not adaptations of products designed for different populations or climates. Instead, they are developed from first principles, grounded in a comprehensive understanding of local conditions and consumer needs. This initiative serves as a foundational demonstration of the group’s broader thesis that Tanzanian products, when developed with technical rigor and contextual relevance, can achieve high standards without qualification.
Building on this foundation, Maris Sustainable Group is evolving into a production-driven enterprise with interests across multiple sectors that influence daily life in Tanzania and the wider region. While the specific industries may vary, the underlying approach remains consistent. The group identifies goods that are currently imported but could be locally produced, and it invests in building them to a high standard. Central to this approach is the rejection of the assumption that locally produced goods are inherently inferior. Instead, the group emphasizes quality, precision, and accountability in production.
The organization seeks to challenge entrenched perceptions not through rhetoric, but through the consistent delivery of well-made products. Its objective is to develop goods that meet genuine consumer needs and inspire confidence, satisfaction, and pride in their use. In doing so, the origin of the product becomes secondary to its quality and performance.
Maris Sustainable Group remains in the early stages of this development. Initial operations have been established, and expansion into additional industries is underway. The founding conviction remains unchanged. Tanzania has never faced a shortage of resources. The current focus is on building the production capacity necessary to fully utilize those resources and to participate more equitably in global value creation.
